Grading

A (4.0) is an honor grade.   It is characterized by work of originality, exceptional effort, thoughtful mastery of concepts, application of research techniques, and rigorous critical thinking. Assignments are carefully completed and submitted on time. Class attendance is exemplary. Class participation is enthusiastic. Weekly journals are frequently insightful.

B+ (3.5) approaches an honor grade.  It shows signs of originality, exceptional effort, thoughtful mastery of concepts, application of research techniques, and rigorous critical thinking. Assignments are completed with minor errors and submitted on time. Class attendance is excellent. Class participation is generally enthusiastic. Weekly journals include moments of insight.

B (3.0) indicates achievement significantly above the acceptable standard.   It is characterized by serious effort, solid mastery of concepts, application of research techniques, and critical thinking. Assignments are complete and submitted on time. Assignments demonstrate effective use of research tools and techniques, but not exceptional insight and sophistication. Class participation is above average. Weekly journals are submitted religiously.

C+ (2.5) denotes achievement partially above the acceptable standard.    It is characterized by serious effort, fairly strong mastery of concepts, application of research techniques, and critical thinking. Assignments are mostly complete and submietted on time. Assignments demonstrate partially effective use of research tools and techniques, but not exceptional insight and sophistication. Class participation is a bit above average. Weekly journals are perfunctory.

C  (2.0) indicates a satisfactory degree of attainment.   Work demonstrates a basic mastery of concepts and a rudimentary application of research techniques and critical thinking. Assignments are for the most part complete, but contain some avoidable errors and omissions. Class participation is average. Weekly journal are inconsistent.

Note: Students must complete IFL 101 with a C (2.0) grade or better in order to graduate from YCP.

D (1.0) denotes a limited mastery of subject matter.   Assignments are incomplete and the research is inadequate. Attendance, class participation, and journals are sporadic.

F  (0) is an indication of failure.   Either the student is not capable of doing and understanding the work, or the student has made little or no effort to do so.

Communication Standards

The College Communication Standards state:

York College recognizes the importance of effective communication in all disciplines and careers. Therefore students are expected to competently analyze, synthesize, organize, and articulate course material in papers, examinations, and presentations. In addition, students should know and use communication skills current to their field of study, recognize the need for revision as part of their writing process, and employ standard conventions of English usage in both writing and speaking. Students may be asked to further revise assignments that do not demonstrate effective use of these communication skills.

This standard applies to all communications and assignments for this class.  For example, all email communications must have appropriate subject lines, salutations, and signatures.

Academic Dishonesty

The new Academic Dishonesty Policy states:

Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated at York College. Academic dishonesty refers to actions such as, but not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, fabricating research, falsifying academic documents, etc., and includes all situations where students make use of the work of others and claim such work as their own.

When an instructor believes that a student has committed an act of academic dishonesty, the instructor must provide written notification to the student, the Department Chair, and the Dean of Academic Affairs of the charge and the sanction. Documentation related to instances of academic dishonesty will be kept on file in the student’s permanent record. If the academic dishonesty is the student’s first offense, the instructor will have the discretion to decide on a suitable sanction up to a grade of 0 for the course. Students are not permitted to withdraw from a course in which they have been accused of academic dishonesty.

I enforce this policy.   This policy applies to all assignments, drafts, and projects.

If you run into a time crunch, talk to me - there are better options than academic dishonesty.

Class Participation

You will be graded on your participation in class discussions and exercises.  Be courteous in class.  Talking,  reading email, or surfing during lectures or presentations is distracting to others.  If you are discourteous during classmates' presentations or disruptive in class, you will lose points.

Textbook and Supplies
Congratulations!! This class uses the IFL eText, so you have no book to buy!

However, you will need a few simple supplies: paper for taking notes, a floppy disk or two for saving computer work, and an alert mind!
