Advising Information
Please check this page regularly if you are one of my advisees

Advisee Responsibilities:  It is your responsibility to see me regularly and to keep informed of graduation requirements.  If you do not do so, do not expect any sympathy if your course check sheet is not in order and you are unable to graduate.  Meeting all deadlines and completing all requirements is your obligation.  My job is to advise and recommend, not to be your records clerk.  I really enjoy working with my students.  Nonetheless, you must take the initiative in the advising process.  Feel free to stop in anytime during office hours to chat.

Letters of Recommendation:  If you need a letter of recommendation for grad school, law school or employment, please schedule a brief meeting with me and bring a resume for me to review.  This is very important if you want me to write a comprehensive letter.  For graduate school or law school, please allow about a month for me to get the letters out.  Also, give me stamped addressed envelopes so I can send them to their proper destination.  Be sure to complete your part of any forms or applications that may be required.  Normally, I only write letters for graduate or law school if you have had at least two upper division courses with me.

      FINNIGAN FELLOWSHIPS

Check http// members.aol.com/jafinnegan for applications.  These Fellowships guarantee 10 weeks of work during the summer in Harrisburg and a $1,000 cash award.  Our majors have won several of these over the years.  See me for details and check out their web site.

       LEGISLATIVE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The PA State House offers Legislative Fellowships.  Stipend:  $1216 a month.  The Program begins in January and runs through April.  2nd Semester Juniors and Seniors are eligible.  You need to submit a completed application form, a resume, two letters of recommendation, a writing sample and a transcript.

     Recommended Reading

Students who are majoring in Political Science should take a look at Mark Rowh's Great Jobs for Political Science Majors.  While it will not replace working with the college Careers Office and your advisor, it is a very practical handbook containing much good advice on networking, resume writing, interviewing, grad school and so on.  About half of the book is devoted to opportunities for Poli Sci majors.  However, don't assume that this list (as rich as it is) is all that Poli Sci students do.  Check it out.  The York College Library call number is JA88 .U6R68, 1998.

I encourage all of my advisees to become active in at least one departmental, college or community organization.  It really helps a lot to be able to demonstrate a record of service and leadership when you apply to grad or law school or enter the job market.
