Internships and Career Opportunities

It's a fair question: How will a Film Studies minor help me get a job after I graduate from York College?  The answer is that the knowledge and skills you gain as a Film Studies minor can open the way to any number of different career paths.  Some college graduates with a Film Studies minor choose to pursue a graduate degree in Film Studies or another allied discipline (English, for example) so that they can one day teach film at the undergraduate or graduate level, engage in professional research and scholarship related to film, or otherwise contribute to the advancement of the field of Film Studies.  Others choose to pursue a career--on their own or through film school, inside or outside Hollywood--as a film director, screenwriter, producer, or technician.  Most college graduates with a Film Studies minor, however, pursue careers in fields that, at first glance, seem to have little or nothing to do with Film Studies.  The advantage of the Film Studies minor is that--aside from acquainting you with the history of cinema and the basics of film criticism and theory--it provides you with an invaluable set of employability skills, including the ability to think for yourself, the skills to communicate effectively, and the capacity for lifelong learning.  More and more companies, including specialized ones, are willing to invest in extensive training to snag bright employees with strong communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills, but not necessarily specialized technical skills.  A minor in Film Studies is useful--especially in today's job market, with it's ever-accelerating rate of change--precisely because it helps you to sharpen a set of broad-based abilities that will enable you to take advantage of a variety of different professional challenges.

All Film Studies minors, regardless of their majors or career plans, are encouraged to take advantage of the wealth of information and resources offered by York College Career Services.  Career Services is located on the third floor of the Student Union building.  They are open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.  While classes are in session, they are open Mondays until 6:00pm, and the last Monday of the month until 7:00pm.  Summer hours vary slightly.  Their telephone number is (717) 815-1452.  Students and alumni can always get individualized assistance by setting up appointments with Career Services staff, whether for job search coaching, resume critiques, or help in choosing a major or graduate school.
