Texts: Silverstein, Bassler & Morrill, Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds Novak, Organic Polymer Chemistry: A Primer Class Notes: Harrison (Handout)
Catalog Description: A study of the principles and applications of physical, theoretical and mechanistic organic chemistry. Topics include methods of synthesis of organic molecules, kinetics and mechanisms of organic reactions, structure-activity relationships and spectroscopy. Prerequisite CHM232.
This offering of advanced organic chemistry makes every effort to relate the topics of organic chemistry to other disciplines and information.
GRADING: 50 pts (12.5%) Midterm Exam 50 pts (12.5%) Final Exam 100pts (25%) Presentation (written & oral) 200pts (50%) Quality of Class Participation, Quizzes (announced & unannounced),
Homework Course Format: The class structure for the course is anticipated to be entirely group work to solve problems and mutually provide a guided learning environment. It is hoped that students will learn information at home to the greatest extent possible and come to class ready to anchor it by application of it. It is hoped that simpler homework problems will be completed at home and that the student will have spent sufficient time with the more difficult problems that s/he will have a great deal to add to the group solution of them. There will be no lectures. However, explanations and guidance will be provided as appropriate. There may be experimental work.
Written Work: It is anticipated that the written work in this course will be of such a quality that it speaks well for the college and the individual. It will thus consist of properly constructed sentences with correctly spelled words. The paragraphs and thoughts presented will be appropriately introduced and elucidated or, if appropriate, argued logically based on data. The college writing standards will be observed.
Honesty: It is anticipated that students will be honest in all respects and that the parameters outlined on any take home work or exams will be diligently followed. In the case of any dishonesty, college procedures will be followed.
